3-Day Village-to-Village Cycling Tour | Samarkand to Bukhara

Day 1 – Drive from Samarkand & Cycle the Bugombir Loop
In the morning, your driver will collect you from your hotel in Samarkand for the roughly three-hour drive to Sayyod Yurt Camp, set in the heart of the Nuratau Mountains. On arrival, settle into your yurt and enjoy lunch at the camp.

After lunch, meet your guide and head out on a relaxed loop ride to ease into the trip. Descend from Sayyod Yurt Camp through Sayyod village toward Asmansay, then continue west along the foothills of Mount Bugombir, over rolling hills, to the village of Oqtepa — with open views of the Kyzylkum steppe and Lake Aydarkul along the way. From Oqtepa, a mix of dirt and paved road brings you back up to camp.  If the ride feels comfortable, the route can be extended by around one additional hour.
The rest of the afternoon is yours — cool off in the outdoor pool, explore the area on foot, or simply enjoy the mountain calm. After dinner, unwind by the pool or gather around the campfire and share stories under the stars.

Travel time & distance: Approx. 172 km / 3 h
Cycling: Approx. 18,5 km / 2 h, (+307 m, –309 m)
Overnight: Sayyod Yurt Camp
(–/L/D)

Day 2 – Cycle to Lake Aydarkul, Transfer to Asraf Village

After breakfast, set off cycling through villages and open steppe towards Lake Aydarkul on a mostly downhill route. Passing through Sayyod and Asmansay, you emerge onto the vast Kyzylkum desert, pedaling another 20 kilometers to the Pistalitau ridge where the lake meets the steppe. Depending on weather conditions, there may be a chance to swim, followed by a picnic lunch at the shore.

After lunch, ride back along the same route for 10 km before turning right toward the former mining town of Khanbandi, following the Pistalitau ridge for another 8 km. At Khanbandi, your driver will meet you for the roughly one-hour transfer to the village of Asraf and the Aslon Homestay. Settle in and soak up the quiet pace of village life. In the evening, join your hosts in the kitchen to learn how to prepare a classic Uzbek dish together.

Cycling: Approx. 50 km / 5 h  (+250 m, –810 m)

The trail runs along the edge of the Nuratau Mountains, with the peaks rising on one side and the vast Kyzylkum desert stretching out on the other.

At Majerum, visit a remarkable ancient juniper tree standing within the Nuratau Nature Reserve. Local legend holds that it was planted around 2,500 years ago by soldiers of Alexander the Great during his campaign through Central Asia. Towering over 40 metres tall with a trunk several metres around, it is one of the oldest living landmarks in the region — a silent witness to thousands of years of history.

From Majerum, continue cycling toward Sentob, one of the oldest settlements in the Nuratau Mountains. On arrival, sit down to a final lunch with your host family before your driver meets you for the transfer to Bukhara, where this unforgettable journey comes to an end.
