4-Day Cycling Through the Nuratau Villages | Samarkand to Bukhara
Day 1 – Cycle from Nurak to Sayyod Yurt Camp
In the morning, your driver will collect you from your hotel in Samarkand for the roughly two-and-a-half-hour drive to the village of Nurak in the Nuratau Mountains. At the trailhead on the edge of the village, meet your guide, get fitted to your bike, and set off into the mountain landscape.
The ride begins with a gentle ascent through rolling hills, passing scattered shepherd houses and the village center before climbing toward the Urtachekuv pass. At the top, take in panoramic views over the mountains before descending on a winding trail toward the village of Khurbonhoji. Continue west along a dirt road, then climb toward the village of Baland Osmon, where a picnic lunch awaits.
After lunch, another ascent carries you into the Sayyod valley, with the final stretch running through Sayyod village before you arrive at Sayyod Yurt Camp. Settle into your yurt and take the afternoon at your own pace — cool off in the outdoor pool, explore the surroundings, or simply enjoy the mountain calm. After dinner, gather around the campfire and share stories under the stars.

Passing through Sayyod and Asmansay, you emerge onto the vast Kyzylkum desert, pedaling another 20 kilometers to the Pistalitau ridge where the lake meets the steppe. Depending on conditions, there may be a chance to swim. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the shore, then ride back along the same route for 10 km before turning right toward the former mining town of Khanbandi, following the Pistalitau ridge for another 8 km.
At Khanbandi, your driver will meet you for the transfer back to Sayyod Yurt Camp. The rest of the day is yours — optional activities such as a cooking class or horseback riding through Sayyod village and the surrounding area are available at an extra charge.

You will also pass though the village of Qolba, continue via Dariston to Uchma village, where the cycling todays cycling concludes. The final stretch is spectacular — the Nuratau Mountains rising to your left, the Kyzylkum desert and Lake Aydarkul stretching out to your right. Your driver will meet you in Uchma for the short 25-minute transfer to Asraf village and the Aslon Homestay.
On arrival, enjoy lunch and time to rest. As the afternoon unfolds, watch your hosts go about their daily rhythm — milking cows, tending the garden, preparing the evening meal — and join in as much or as little as you like.

In Majerum, stop to visit one of the oldest living landmarks in Central Asia — an ancient juniper tree standing within the Nuratau Nature Reserve. Local legend holds that it was planted around 2,500 years ago by soldiers of Alexander the Great during his campaign through the region. Towering over 40 metres tall with a trunk several metres around, it has stood here longer than most civilizations — a silent witness to thousands of years of history.
From Majerum, continue to Sentob, one of the oldest settlements in the Nuratau Mountains. On arrival, sit down for a final lunch with your host family before your driver transfers you to Bukhara, where this journey comes to an end.
